DESCRIPTION
Variant titleA Waverley Library Local History FactsheetDate2025Author/CreatorWaverley LibraryContentsBronte House is Waverley's oldest surviving property. Its story begins in 1836 when William Mortimer Lewis, Colonial Architect, bought 42 acres of land at Nelson Bay. Running into financial difficulties the unfinished house and land was sold to Robert and Georgiana Lowe in 1843.
Despite only being in residence for four years, the Lowes completed the house, and established the extensive gardens. The property changed hands through the years until Waverley Council purchased Bronte House in 1948.
Bronte House was added to the Australian Heritage Commission Register of the National Estate in 1978, and listed on the State Heritage Register in 1999. TypeFactsheetCollectionLocal History Factsheets
