DESCRIPTION
Variant titleA Waverley Library Local History FactsheetAuthor/CreatorWaverley LibraryContentsPrior to European settlement the sweep of land between Bondi Beach and Rose Bay was formed of a series of sand dunes and freshwater lagoons. Some geologists believe that this long, low passage of land once lay entirely underwater, making South Head and the land around it an island.
The first written reference to the Bondi lagoons is on a map dated 1868, but would have been an important source of fresh water and food for the Gadigal, Birrabirragal, and Biddigal people who are the traditional custodians of the land that forms Waverley LGA.
