DESCRIPTION
Variant titleA Waverley Library Local History FactsheetAuthor/CreatorWaverley LibraryContentsSydney's early colonists quickly turned freshwater streams into open sewers, causing disease outbreaks and pollution. The Bondi Ocean Outfall Sewer, proposed in 1877, addressed this crisis. The 130-year-old system, heritage-listed in 2002, covers 3560 hectares, draining the CBD and suburbs. Notable for engineering precision, it runs from Bondi Golf Links to the city, marked by the Bondi Sewer Vent. Blair Street, initially "Sewer Road," was renamed in 1914. Transferred to the State Government in 1916, it remains a significant part of Sydney's history.CollectionLocal History Factsheets
